“The First Dawn of the New Year in the Lands of the Morning Sun”
The Lands of the Morning Sun are an isolated high-mountain kingdom spread across harsh icy ridges and mist-shrouded lakes. Inspired by Far Eastern cultures yet belonging to no known world, this is a realm where spiritual practices intertwine with ancient legends, and the land itself remembers the events endured over centuries.
The kingdom stands upon colossal stone plateaus that, according to legend, were once the body of the great mountain spirit Kaishira. Homes and temples are built right into the cliffs, where priests watch the heavens and read the omens.
Today marks the first dawn of the New Year, the great festival.
The night had been long and loud: the people of the kingdom honored the departed, thanked Kaishira and the guardian spirits for the year gone by, and called good fortune into the one to come. Echoes of dances, fiery processions, and the unending chime of bells still lingered in the air.
But now the whole world sleeps.
The birds are silent, the snow glitters beneath the first rays of the new sun, and in the depths of the frozen bay the torn sail of a sunken fishing boat whispers quietly.
